Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and John Mathews, Charleston, including letters, 30 Oct. 1819 and 19 Jan. 1821, discussing natural history and Coffin's involvement in the export of song birds from the U.S. to Europe; letter, 11 Jan. 1817, from Beaufort, advising Pinckney of a request for shell specimens from a Liverpool customs collector, and recommending the use of piled oyster shells as sea walls; an undated letter to Pinckney re Coffin's travels and his associations with James Watt, Jr., "of steam Engine celebrity, in starting a boat to ply between Margate & London."

Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (February 25, 1746 – August 16, 1825) was an early American statesman of South Carolina, Revolutionary War veteran, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention.
